Y-Chromosome Test

Because the Y-Chromosome is present only in males and not in females, Y-Chromosome testing can be used to solve a number of forensic cases. A DNA laboratory is often faced with situations where a client has a sample, often a mixed sample (such as a stain on an underwear or bed sheet), and asked to determine whether male DNA is present. A Y-Chromosome test will not only be able to determine whether a male sample is present, but it is also able to provide a profile for the male Y Chromosome if male DNA is present. As such, clients can even have the ability to compare the Y-Chromosome profile to a suspected male in question.

The cost for a Y-Chromosome test is $99 US for 12 Loci, $119 US for 20 Loci and $199 US for 44 Loci. In most cases, the 20 Loci test is adequate and will be able to detect whether male DNA is present and if it is present, it will provide a 20 Loci picture of the Y-Chromosome pattern of the donor of the DNA in the event that you later want to match it to a suspected male.

If the sample to be tested is a forensic sample (non-buccal swab) such as a stain, then a forensic sample fee of $180 US applies for each forensic sample submitted for testing.

Step-by-Step

Step 1 - Order the test. Order laboratory testing by phone at 1-888-262-2263 or by mail, or click here to order the private DNA collection kit online .

Step 2 - Collect and submit the samples to the laboratory. Kits are delivered to your door within 24 hours by courier or within 5 working days by mail. Each Y-Chromosome test kit comes complete with all of the collection materials and instructions for you to take the test in the privacy of your own home. All Y-Chromosome testing kits employ the buccal swab technique, allowing you to perform the collection within minutes with no fuss, no pain. Submit the DNA specimen directly to the laboratory after collection.

Step 3 - Wait for results. Y-Chromosome test results are available within 2 to 3 weeks and can be obtained as soon as testing is completed using your secure order number and password online or by phone. Formal results documents are delivered to you by mail and / or E-mail. You may also call our laboratory to discuss your results over the telephone. To ensure the privacy and confidentiality of your case, we will confirm your password and file number before we discuss results over the telephone (the password and file numbers are provided to you when you order the test).
